Appellate Law

Helping At All Levels

From magistrate to judge, to the court of appeals, to the supreme court.

Appealing a judicial decision can be a complicated and time-sensitive process. The attorneys at Ellis Wright & Ewegen have experience at all stages of the appellate process. We have helped clients appeal magistrate decisions to district court judges, district court decisions to the Colorado court of appeals, and court of appeals’ decisions to the Colorado supreme court.

When challenging a court’s decision, it is important to pay careful attention to the deadlines involved, as missing the deadline to file notice of an appeal may completely bar the ability to appeal. It is also important to understand the standards of review for each issue and to ensure that the record submitted to the reviewing court will be sufficient to demonstrate the basis for any errors made.

At Ellis Wright & Ewegen, our primary appellate attorney, Katy Ellis, has a particular love of appellate practice. After graduating from law school, she clerked for the Honorable Judge Russell Carparelli at the Colorado court of appeals. Since that time she has represented clients before the Colorado court of appeals and supreme court. She has also filed numerous appeals of magistrate decisions to district court judges. Ms. Ellis also volunteers in the Colorado appellate pro bono program, a pilot program that provides pro bono attorneys to represent indigent pro se litigants in civil cases pending before the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court.
